Athletics Commissioner Trainee
2022
It is absolutely crazy that I'm going into my second year of high school. Felt like just yesterday that I was going to my freshman orientation. I'm so happy that I've made some many good friends this past year. I'm looking forward to all my classes this year, but I am a little stressed out because I am taking harder classes. I am applying myself as much as I can. This year is going to be difficult to find a balance between fun and work. But leadership is all about being able to adapt and change in stressful situations. I am looking forward to this year and can't wait to see what happens.

Section 2: Quotes
“The Day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.”
-This quote really means a lot to me because I have to work for everything in my life. I have never had anything handed to me. With sports or school. I have to work for everything. Especially for me, I try to hold myself to a higher standard. I also try to follow people’s footsteps, but I have to realize that I’m my own individual person.
“You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them.”-Michael Jordan
-This is another big one for me. Your mental health is the thing that will get you through life. Without good mental health you will be alone and feel alone. You will also burn a lot of bridges with people because you will push them away. You will be alone. Having a good mentality will get you through life.
“No such thing as a life that’s better than yours”-J Cole
-This quote comes from the song Love Yourz by J Cole. This song really is something that I live by, but this line is a big part of it. You can’t wish you had someone else's life because then you won't ever truly enjoy your own. There is always going to be someone better than you are. Someone that has nicer things. But there is a different person, and you need to appreciate yourself. Without that you won’t grow as a person.

Section 3: Quote
“What you do has a far greater impact than what you say.”-Stephen Covey. The reason I chose this quote is because anyone can say what they want, but actually doing something about it is much better. You need to actually fully understand that things rely on yourself and others to do their job. And if they don’t then things don’t work out. This is very relevant to this class in general because everyone has a job, and if people don’t do what they say then it shows. We won’t be a successful leadership class and serve the student body if we don’t work up to the words we say.
Section 4: Goals
Leadership Goal #1-One goal I have for myself this year is to really learn what the title of athletic commissioner means. What works and what doesn’t. Kind of learn the ropes and get a feeling for it. But I really like my 2 mentors that I’m learning from. Kade and Ava are 2 great people to be shadowing. They really make sure that I know what I’m doing.
Leadership Goal #2-This year I would like to become super close with everyone in the program. Last year I didn’t get close with some people, and I regretted it, and I don’t want to do that same thing again. I want to get closer with everyone in the program. I don't want to have as many regrets this year as I did last year.
Short Term Goal #1-This year I would like to excel in my schoolwork and leave Sophomore year with a 4.4 GPA. That would look really good for me. This would also boost my confidence and bring my mental state back to normal. Doing this while being a 3-sport athlete would look really good for myself.
Short Term Goal #2-Another goal I have for this year is to be a leader in each and every sport I play. Rather this just becomes a role model for my teammates or being a captain. I just want to be able to lead my team. This would be a huge accomplishment for me. I always try to be a leader in school but if I can do it in my sports as well that would be amazing.
Long Term Goal #1-This year I want to start building a resume to show colleges. Rather this be showing off my accomplishments or even grades. Just get a start on it. Getting a jump on things would never hurt me. I don't want to wait until the last minute to worry about college and I want to figure things out now and not stress as much later.
Long Term Goal #2-One goal I have would be sticking to what I believe in and not swaying from that. That means not giving into peer pressure. And even if it’s the thing that’s cool, to just stay loyal myself. Not to try and be cool and do what's right. This will not only keep my closer with myself but also make me more comfortable.

Section 5: Goals
My first goal was to understand what a rally commissioner means. I think I have really learned the ropes and have contributed a lot to the program and class as a whole. I would like to say that I’m not a trainee and an actual commissioner but I don’t know everything. So I look forward to finishing the year off strong
My Second goal was becoming close to everyone in the program. I feel like I have also surpassed my expectations because I have become closer with literally everyone in the program. I feel like with anyone in the program I can have an in depth conversation with any of them. So I’m proud of myself for that.
My third goal was keeping a 4.4 GPA whilst being a three sport athlete. I haven’t been able to accomplish this but I have been able to keep myself over a 3.6 and excelling in all sports. I have also boosted my mental state and I’m a lot nicer to the people I love. I have dropped my attitude and take time everyday for myself.
My fourth goal was being a leader in every sport I play. I have accomplished this goal. For football I wasn’t voted as a captain for all the games, a few of the games I went out there because of my performance the games before. I feel like I have grown a lot in the development of football. For basketball I was an all time captain and played in every game, I was a leader and well liked by everyone. And for track, we don’t have captains but everyone comes to me for help with their blocks and people respect me. So I feel like I shine there.
My fifth goal was creating my professional side of my highschool career. I have definitely grown an immense amount in this because we have had two very helpful presentations and I’ve grown so much. I feel like I have the confidence to go into an interview and ace it because of the information I’ve gotten this year alone.
My sixth and final goal was sticking to my beliefs and not giving into anything. I have definitely grown in this as well, I’ve had many people try to peer pressure me and I haven’t given in. And I’m always respectful everywhere I go. I have stuck to myself this year and grown closer with the people around me. I would like to say this is the goal I’ve definitely grown the most in and stuck to the most.

Nathan Curless: the man, the myth, the legend. It is a rarity these days to come across someone so humble, yet self assured and confident. That is the epitome of Nathan Curless.
At the age of 15, Nathan has accomplished more than many people his age. In highschool, he excelled in his class. Not only showing leadership skills on the field and court, he led his classmates within the classroom. He is scored within the top 10% of his class with academics, while playing 3 different sports. He is known at Ripon High as someone who would stand up for what was right, while always providing a safe place to find help.
Nathan plans to attend a good college. He wants to get his bachelor of arts in Psychology, and minor in criminal justice. All he knows is that he wants to help people in whatever way he can. He wants to be in law enforcement somewhere, and he thinks that his bachelor in psychology would help him a lot in this field. After he finishes college he is going to immediately put in an application at any local law enforcement agency.
It is very clear that Nathan wants to help people. But he doesn’t want to just stop at law enforcement. His big dream is making it to the swat team. This is his dream. He wants to be able to protect his country. He is definitely going to make a difference in many people's lives.
Nathan is able to handle himself in very high stress situations. In the classroom,l leadership, or even on the court. There have been many games or grades at risk where he stepped up. He took control and led his team and classmates to the win. He is made for this job. He has his life set out.
Section 8: Role Model
Throughout my entire life there have been many different people who I aspire to be more like. But someone who stands out to me is my dad. He has to deal with so much and I'm not sure how he does it. He deals with being a firefighter on a day to day basis. But he has 5 kids to take care of and he tries to make it to every single event. He always supports me and wants the absolute best for me. He wants all of his kids to be successful in life. He is so loving and I really would like to grow up like him.
Section 9: Inner Animal
I would call myself a penguin. I feel for all of the people close to me. I love being in the cold weather. I like to swim. I'm pretty mature and can care for myself. When I trust people, I would put my life in there hands. This is a bad thing but also a good. I also have a good amount of common sense. That's why I would say I'm a penguin.

Huh
Love yours Huh, love yours No such thing No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours (love yours) No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing, no such thing Heart beatin' fast, let a person know that he alive Fake people, mad snakes Snakes in the grass let a person know that he arrived Don't be sleepin' on your level 'Cause it's beauty in the struggle, (beauty, beauty) Goes for all y'all It's beauty in the struggle, (beauty, beauty) Let me explain, yeah It's beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success Hear my words or listen to my signal of distress I grew up in the city and know sometimes we had less Compared to some of my people down the block, man, we were blessed And life can't be no fairytale, no once upon a time But I be goddamned if a person don't be tryin' So tell me, mama please, why you be drinking all the time? Does all the pain he brought you still linger in your mind? 'Cause pain still lingers on mine On the road to riches, listen, this is what you'll find The good news is, you've came a long way The bad news is, you went the wrong way Think being broke was better No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours (think being broke was better) No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing, no such thing (Think being broke was better, yeah) For what's money without happiness? Or hard times without the people you love? Though I'm not sure what's 'bout to happen next I asked for strength from the Lord up above 'Cause I've been strong so far But I can feel my grip loosening Quick, do something before you lose it for good Get it back and use it for good And touch the people how you did like before I'm tired of livin' with demons 'cause they always inviting more Think being broke was better Now I don't mean that phrase with no disrespect To all my people out there living in debt Cashing minimal checks Turn on the TV see a person in a Rolex And fantasize about a life with no stress I mean this sincerely And that's a me who was once in your shoes Living with nothin' to lose I hope one day you hear me Always gon' be a bigger house somewhere, but feel me 'Long as the people in that place love you dearly Always gon' be a whip that's better than the one you got Always gon' be some clothes that's fresher than the one's you rock Always gon' be a bitch that's badder out there on the tours But you ain't never gon' be happy 'til you love yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours (love yours) No such thing as a life that's better than yours (love yours) No such thing as a life that's better than yours (love yours) No such thing, no such thing Heart beatin' fast, let a person know that he alive Fake people, mad snakes Snakes in the grass let a person know that he arrived |
I decided to choose "Love Yourz" By J Cole. This song really inspired me to actually love myself and not let little things bring me down. You have to have a good mindset and have the right people around you, for yourself to actually get better. But this song also highlights the other road in life that people take. You can go the wrong way which is why you need to be around people who have similar beliefs to you own.

Section 13:What I like about being a Member of Leadership
It's very hard to pick my favorite memories this year but so far my first favorite moment has to be dancing on the football field for the night rally. That was super fun and I'm glad we were able to do it. It seemed to have brought many smiles to the faces of our community. I was just super happy that we were able to do it. Another favorite moment is the day after Powder Puff. This was one of my favorites because it was a very large event that I put on. The athletics commissioners worked day in and day out to get a good turnout. When we got all the praise from the class the day after, it made me feel accomplished with myself. It made me feel like I was making a change. And for my final memory it has to be our secret Santa with the class. I don't know what it is about seeing people light up with smiles but it gets me every time. Seeing everyone smile and be happy is a very good thing.
Section 14: A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership
A peer in leadership that I take for granted is Ximena. She is always by my side no matter what. And she will help me through anything. She does not get enough praise for all the hard work. I'll be sitting in class working on some work and she'll come and ask if I need any help. I'll ask her is she has any and she'll show me. Her to-do list is so crazy. It it full, but she is still making sure everyone is okay first. She really is one of the best people I know. And she does not get enough praise.

Section 16:What I love to do
In my life I enjoy many different things. Some of my favorite are Football, Basketball, and listening to music. So the top 3 pictures are representing my football career. I just started playing football for Freshman year, and I fell in love. It wasn't only the sport but it was the bonds that I created with them. Just under the football pictures are basketball pictures, I have been playing basketball for about 6 years and I haven't looked back since. It has brought me a lot of happiness. And for Music, it got me through many different hardships in my life.
Section 17-Letter to Parents
My parents have encouraged me to push myself to my full potential. They have always stood by my side in thick and thin. They will always be there for me and rooting me on. I would just like to thank them for everything they have done and will continue to do. We have built some very strong bonds and nothing will ever break them. I have had so many memories, some good, some bad. But I can never repay them for what they’ve done.
Section 18:General Advice
To the future athletics commissioners
I would just like to start off with good luck, and I wish the best for you guys throughout the year. This job isn't extremely difficult, but it's also not extremely easy. You must stay up on all the paper work and make sure you are helping your class with anything they need. Officers will need you help, and you need to be in the right space to help them. I would recommend staying up on the "Athlete of the Month" because it's very easy to over look and just pass by. Make sure to try your hardest and put a lot of effort into everything you do. PowderPuff is one of the biggest events we put on and my greatest piece of advice would be to stay organized. And make sure you put out enough publicity and make sure everything your doing is approved and appropriate. And dodgeball. Dodgeball is a very stressful event, make sure you have most of the work done beofre the actual week starts. And throughout the week be prepared because people will yell and scream in your face. You have to just stay professional and run the best event you can. And this year will not be easy, you will know what failure looks like, you just have to focus on the positives things and make sure you put our best step forward.
Sincerely, Nathan Curless-Athletics Commissioner Trainee

Don't, procrastinate you work, Morty will know if you wait on anything, and the more work you get, the more stressed you will become
Don't, burn the bridge with anyone in the class, everybody in that class is there to help, let them Don't, not talk to you mentor, they have expierienced most of things that you needs, they will give you insight on all the things you need. |

Section 21: The Professional
For my entire leadership experience as a whole I have learned so much in the professional world. But this year especially I have seen why it is so important. We have had many people come in and talk to us, and teach us about how to be professional and stand out all the time. The two areas I was most interested in and learned the most of was the Cover Letter presentation from Mr. Hobbs, and the Resume Presentation from Mrs. Hutto. Mr. Hobbs was discussing the importance of knowing the company. Doing research will put you ahead of the competition and make you really stand out from the crowd. Also not to lie on anything, just be you. Also make all the information clear and concise and don’t use too many words. Keep it clean and concise and know your information well.
Section 22: Change
This year has been full of many different experiences. As a leadership class we have had many ups and downs. But we have gotten through it. One change I would like to see is the class be more unified. I even struggle with this. But whenever we get to sit where we want there's always that one table that has 6 or 7 people at it. Sitting next to your friends is fun but it doesn’t make the class very diverse. I would like to see whether this year or next year the class really becomes a whole. I feel like this would make events run a lot smoother and everything would be much better. It would also take stress off of many people in the program. A time of frustration was during the week when Morty was gone. And people weren’t doing much of anything. It just made me mad because the work they weren’t doing wasn’t coming back for them, it was going to someone who actually cares. Another place of frustration was when Kylee left. She was Elias’ and my mentor and she just gave up. She didn’t get her way and just quit. So what is that showing us, but that doesn’t fall on Morty or the program at all, it’s on her. It just frustrated me. Like I said above, I feel like if we become more united then our events would be better for the student body. But I will say our events seem to be a lot smoother this year than last year. And I would just like to say that Mackenzie is always on top of everything and that's most likely why our events are smoother. But this year is definitely better than last year. The year for me has been a lot. I feel like this year my classes are harder but the stress from last year was greater. The stress that I experienced freshman year was like nothing I’ve ever had to deal with before. This year I have learned the ropes and got my footing in this whole highschool thing. Leadership has also seemed a lot more fun this year. I’m sad that I won’t be there next year, I send my best wishes to the people next year.
Section 23: Ideal Leader
I think the ideal leader in my eyes is someone who is willing to give their entire heart and soul into something they believe in. A leader doesn't just have to be in a classroom, sport, or even position. It just has to be someone who wants to better themselves and the others around them. They have to have a lot of dedication and willingness to do whatever it takes for things to get done. They need to easy-going and strict. Because whenever you think of a leader you only think about the things that will better the area of need. But you also need to take into account the fact that the people bettering it need to enjoy it too. So, I think a good leader will make change in a fun way and make sure everyone is understanding his or her job. For example, I think Makenzie is a great leader, and a good example of what a great leader is. She leads the Ripon High School leadership class, and everyone loves to be around her, and she gets everything done with a smile on her face.

Rally Commissioner
Position Assessment: Over the last couple of months, athletics has been busy with homecoming. Homecoming brings us Powder Puff. This is a very large event put on by Athletics. We had been preparing for it for weeks prior. We split up the work as evenly as we could. Throughout this whole time, I'm still in training. So, trying to figure out what I was doing was a little stressful, but I had some great people to teach me the ropes. I was personally in charge of the cheerleaders, Kade was in charge of Seniors & Freshman, and Ava was in charge of Juniors & Sophomores. This was a lot easier for all of us. We were able to rely on each other's and get everything done. We got everything set up and the event ran extremely well. We had an amazing turn out and got many praises by the community and the student body for putting on a great event.
Standing Committee: I was not a part of any standing committee at this time.
Special Committee: I was a part of Homecoming decorations and publicity; we were given many tasks and I got mine done before the due date and made sure they all looked good. This brought in many different people and groups to be involved with homecoming and I feel everyone in the group did an amazing job.
Mentorship Evaluation: With all crazy going on with homecoming, we haven't been able to do much. I've spent a lot of my time with athletics and making sure we get all the paperwork done and over with. And she's been busy with being the president of the Junior Class. But before homecoming we have gotten to know each other a little more.
Concerns: My only concern at the moment is not everyone in the program is building good relationships. Some people are still super closed off. And leadership is also about building relationships. You will really build amazing, lifelong relationships with some people in leadership.
Positive Comment: One positive comment is that all the upper-class men are so easy to talk to and are super chill. They are super inviting, and they will help you with whatever. I really like to see this.
One Change: One change I would like to see is everyone be on the same page. I understand that we were all under an incredible amount of stress but everyone being on the same page is crucial. Events can be ruined when people aren't on the same page. This is an easy change and if I had to blame it on something it would be Homecoming.
My Impact: With me being a commissioner I am not required to help with my class. But I offered when I was available and was able to help them with the float and all things Homecoming. I feel like I was a big help and took some of the stress off of them. I also helped set up and clean up the Halloween dance put on by the freshman. I have tried to help everyone in the process of Homecoming.
